Volunteer story… Richard and Tony
Richard joined us in December 2014 as a volunteer to give something back to the community. He had found his world thrown upside down after having a stroke, most of all when returning home and trying to rebuild his life. He was keen to support other people deal with the changes he faced and see the positives he has through community groups and activities.
We paired Richard up with a new member Tony, who was feeling isolated since a stroke has restricted his mobility and he spends a lot of time indoors. We arranged for the pair to meet at Tony’s, although it was quite difficult for Richard to access Tony’s house due to steps and narrow doorways, Richard did well getting in with support of his wife Helen. They had a great chat, realising the pair got on very well we planned to meet again occasionally when both chaps could arrange transport to avoid the difficulty of accessing Tony’s house. They have been chatting on the phone in the meantime and plan to have meet ups in town, Tony using a fair4all taxi service who have been really helpful and Richard using dial a ride.

Disability Action Alliance Volunteer Charter
News from Disability Action Alliance:
They write ….We want to let you know that the Disability Action Alliance is launching a Volunteer Charter for disabled people & you are invited to join us at the launch event on the 5th December 2014! (see attachment below).
The Charter aims to increase accessible volunteering opportunities for disabled people and encourage disabled people to use their skills and assets through volunteering. This will support a vision that will enable ‘A society in which the contribution of disabled people as volunteers is valued and volunteering opportunities are widely available on an equal and accessible basis’ .
This is an opportunity for us all to emphasise and celebrate the important role that we can play in further enabling disabled people to make a valuable contribution to society and fulfil their potential through volunteering.
This initiative has the full support of organisations such as Community Service Volunteers (CSV), Disability Rights UK (DRUK) and Buckinghamshire Disability Services (BuDS), to name but a few. The Charter also has the support of the Minister of State for Disabled People, Mark Harper, who will be endorsing the launch on this the ‘International Volunteer Day’.
This event, on Friday 5th December 2014, offers a rare opportunity to network with the leading figures in the disability community, discussing and celebrating a major development in the opening-up of volunteering opportunities to disabled people. It will give your organisation an opportunity to sign up and commit to the Volunteer Charter.
Guest speakers include Duncan Tree & Jemma Mindham (CSV), Andrew Clark (BuDS), Cllr Zahid Mohammed (Chair Bucks County Council & Chair Bucks Legacy Board), Sue Bott (DRUK), Dave Oxley (McAfee UK), Bev Flanagan (Buckingham Technical College), Richard d’Souza (DWP Director) and a paralympian – Naomi Riches. Agenda covers ‘Why Volunteering Matters’ & ‘The Experiences of Disabled People as Volunteers’.
Venue: Buckinghamshire University Technical College, Oxford Road, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire HP21 8PB from 10.30am – 2.15pm. Lunch will be provided and there will be activities to try in the foyer too.
